Evanston IL Apprentice Employment Program

Evanston IL has a nice program to train people to eventually get jobs with the City OF Evanston IL. I think this is a wonderful program to help provide jobs and skills to people and help develop a higher self esteem and great job to go with it.Evanston IL Apprentice Employment Program

The city of Evanston calls this opportunity the “Utilities Apprentice Program Open to All Evanston Residents Seeking Employment” An applicant just has to be 18 years of age and have at least a High School Diploma or GED and a valid drivers license.

I quote the city of Evanston IL

“EVANSTON, IL – Looking for a new employment opportunity? The Evanston Utilities Department invites all residents age 18 and older to apply to its Water Worker 1 Apprentice Program by Wednesday, December 31.

Apprentices will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the Water & Sewer Industry; develop skills in underground utility maintenance; develop skills maintaining water plant equipment; become familiar with requirements for City of Evanston workers; and earn an Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Apprentice positions are full-time, two-year positions and start at $11 an hour. Applications can be completed online at cityofevanston.org/utilities until December 31. All applicants are also required to take a written test on Thursday, January 15, 10 a.m., in the Parasol Room at the Morton Civic Center, located at 2100 Ridge Ave.

No previous experience within the field is required. However, all applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver’s license and safe driving record (or have the ability to obtain a license), and be a resident of Evanston (Zip code 60201 or 60202).

Evanston IL Gets DIVVY Bike Share

Evanston IL Gets DIVVY Bike Share

Have you ever heard about DIVVY Bike share? It is a system where once you join you get access to nice bikes for a little riding around town by the hour. There are stations where the bicycles are set up and it is completely automated so you can get and return a bike whenever you want. So far this system is only available in New York City, Washington DC , Minneapolis, Miami, Columbus, San Francisco, Boulder, Boston, Houston, and Chicago Land.

Here is a photo I took today of a DIVVY bike station

IMG_20141117_153741

There are different types of memberships available including one I think is really cool and that is the ability to share with a non-member and get to go for a ride with a friend for 30 to 60 minutes or so when ever you want. There is no need for a reservation. I think this sounds like a lot of fun and here is a link to the City of Evanston’s DIVVY program if you want to learn more about it.

See you on the bike path at the beach (maybe next summer when it warms up).

Obama Speech at Northwestern University Evanston IL Thursday October 2nd

President Barack Obama is coming to Northwestern University this Thursday October 1st. The Chicago Sun times reports he will be on campus to deliver a speech reported to be about the economy. Evanston Residents could see two Marine Helicopters and 2 Osprey aircraft that did practice landings at the Northwestern campus on Monday.

This was very exciting to Evanston IL residents and who had no knowledge about this preparation that took place around 1:00 PM. In 2006 then Illinois Senator Obama delivered the commencement address at Northwestern. What America needs, Obama said in 2006, “is a sense of purpose.”

This event is sure to attract much attention from the national news and people trying to catch a look at President Obama or those lucky enough to hear his speech whether you are a fan or not he is still the President of the USA.

Evanston IL Ranked Among Top 25 Bike to Work Cities in the Country

Evanston is full of bike riders. Even in the middle of winter we see people slipping and sliding but still riding their bicycles around town. There have recently been changes in the bike lanes and on Davis street which runs through town. They have made the bike lanes inside the parking lanes which keeps the bikers out of traffic and required a complete reconfiguration of Davis street.

According to the City of Evanston and Bloomberg:

“Evanston is one of the nation’s top 25 cities for biking to work, according to a recent Bloomberg News report utilizing U.S. Census data.

With 5.3 percent of commuters pedaling to their jobs, Evanston ranks as number 15 on Bloomberg’s list. It is the only city in Illinois to make the top 25.

Other top bike-to-work cities include first-ranked Davis, California; Boulder, Colorado (2); Madison, Wisconsin (9); Minneapolis, Minnesota (20); and Bloomington, Indiana (25).”
